Cold
atmospheric plasma (CAP) has been used as novel cancer treatment strategy. The
interest to use of CAP for cancer treatment has been increasing.
Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is a gas which is partially ionized and includes
clouds of ions, electrons, and reactive neutral species like reactive oxygen
species (ROS), hydroxyl radicals (HO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO). In
this study, it is aimed to treat cancer lesions in the outer layer of the human
body skin by using atmospheric pressure cold plasma method. The temperature of
the created plasma is at room temperature levels that will not damage the
tissues. The plasma unit has been designed and developed in Plazmatek
company. Capacitive electrode design was used for the cold plasma. High purity
helium was used as discharge gas. Low frequency sinusoidal wave output high
voltage unit is used as power source. The duration of treatment for each lesion
was determined as 15 minutes per day for 10 days. At the end of this period, it
was performed medical evaluation. Lesion showed superficial crust formation.
Histology revealed basal cell carcinoma of nodular type with widespread polimorphonuclear and
mononuclear inflammatory cell infiltration. The medical results will be
provided and discussed.
